Sciatica pain is a symptom of other issues, not the actual problem. It is an irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, often caused by disc issues. Although there are a number of different issues that can cause sciatica. Sciatica is generally felt on just one side of the body and is often referred to as searing or sharp as opposed to throbbing or aching. While sciatica is often caused by back related issues, it is not actually back pain.
Sciatica is very common, affecting more than 3 million people per year in the United States. Common causes of sciatica include bulging or herniated discs, bone spurs, inflammation or degeneration of the vertebrae or disc at the spinal levels of the sciatic nerve.
We Go Through Insurance
We are a preferred provider and in-network with virtually every insurance plan, including Anthem, Aetna, Cigna, Humana, Medicare, and too many others to name.
There are a number of different kinds of treatments for sciatica, almost all depending on the root cause. At Integrated Physical Medicine, we believe in non-invasive, non-surgical approaches whenever possible.
There are numerous treatment options when it comes to sciatica. Let’s discuss non-surgical spinal decompression therapy as a treatment option.
Sciatica caused by either a disc bulge/herniation, disc degeneration, facet joint inflammation or other conditions such as spondylolisthesis can be alleviated with the use of spinal decompression therapy.
Non-surgical spinal decompression therapy involves a specialized table which, once the patient is properly placed, slowly and methodically separates the involved spinal vertebrae utilizing computer-controlled traction. The separation that is created during decompression allows blood flow and other key nutrients to reach the disc, which is vital as intervertebral discs lack a direct vascular blood supply. The separation creates a vacuum phenomenon that “sucks” the bulged/herniated portion of the disc back into its intended place while also providing the aforementioned blood supply and nutrients to the damaged disc allowing healing to progress.
The end goal of spinal decompression therapy is to not only relieve the symptoms of sciatica or disc disorders but actually heal the injured disc which is unique to this type of treatment. Many other available treatment options for sciatica will simply mask the symptoms by reducing inflammation rather than healing the disc at the cellular level as happens with non-surgical spinal decompression therapy.
Go to your insurance company’s website to see which chiropractors on your list accept insurance from your company and confirm they are preferred providers. Believe it or not, some chiropractors do not accept insurance! If you are still unsure, call the office and ask them if they are preferred providers with your insurance. By selecting a chiropractor near you that is a preferred provider for your insurance company, you are guaranteed the least expensive treatment costs. Some chiropractors advertise low prices for cash patients because they do not accept insurance. However, in most cases, using your insurance at a preferred provider will give you the lowest costs.
